Most people tend to believe that the Poppy Appeal is to
remember all the brave men and women who fought for our
Country, and in many cases, gave their lives, in the First
and Second World Wars. Indeed, the Poppy is used as a symbol
of hope and reassurance because they thrived in the mud and
desolation of Flanders an Picardy in the First World
War and their vibrant colour gave our Soldiers heart and
hope whilst fighting in the trenches.
However, it is not just in these two terrible wars that
we remember our fallen heroes - we remember the fallen of
the Falklands in 1981, and, more recently, those who have
given their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is so
important that we keep their memories alive and give support
to those who have been so terribly injured - every penny
that is collected goes towards supporting our heroes.
I have taken over organising the Poppy Appeal and
collection in St. Osyth from Johnny Austin - John has done a
brilliant job over many years and when he asked me to take
over, how could I say no - the Poppy Appeal must continue
and if you feel that you could spare some time in November
to help with the door to door Appeal, then please let me
know. Last year, John was responsible for collecting some
£2400, and this year I hope to surpass this, with your help.
It is such a worthy cause, and is so well summed up in the
Legion's Exhortation :-
